The history of the estate begins in 1999 when Nikos Vourvoukelis, always supported by his wife Flora Vourvoukelis, decided to revive the terroir of Avdira’s vineyard. Driven by a lifelong love for vineyards and wine, he chooses to engage in viticulture and winemaking alongside his professional career in Medicine. He planted the first 2 hectares on the fertile hills of the region, and ensured that the vineyards are cultivated with respect for the local ecosystem.
He chooses to cultivate unique native grape varieties alongside famous international ones. By blending both native and international wine varieties he manages to create high-quality wines. The estate bears the name “Vourvoukeli Estate,” after the last name of its founder, defining its course and orientation based on his personal values.
Nikos Vourvoukelis, paved the way for the current path of our winery.
Nikos Vourvoukelis passion for viticulture and winemaking has been passed to the next generation, with his two oldest sons, Giorgos and Odysseas, embracing the winemaking path. The younger brother, Alexios, chose to follow in his father’s footsteps in the field of Medicine.
Unfortunately, the founder of the Estate, Nikos Vourvoukelis, passed away in February 2014. Nevertheless, the Vourvoukelis family remains committed to carrying on his vision with the same dedication and love. Flora, his wife and lifelong companion since the establishment of the estate, has assumed the role of Estate president and is responsible for its financial management. George Vourvoukelis, who has pursued studies in viticulture and oenology, now oversees the cultivation, production, and winemaking aspects of the estate. Similarly, Odysseas Vourvoukelis, with studies in agriculture and wine marketing, is involved in both cultivation and the promotion and sales of wines. Nikos Vourvoukelis’s passion and dedication will always serve as a source of inspiration for our estate, and we remain faithfully committed to the path he paved.
The Vourvoukeli Estate was founded out of Vourvoukeli family love for the historical region of Avdira and wine. With a vision for the revival of ancient native grape varieties, Nikos and Flora Vourvoukelis were the first and only ones in the region to start cultivation in 1999, planting the first vineyard on the fertile hills after many years. The unique microclimate of Avdira is ideal for viticulture, as the summer months’ experience minimal necessary rainfall and low nighttime temperatures, creating a dry and cool environment, perfect for the proper ripening of grapes.
In just a few years, the Vourvoukelis Estate has established itself in the wine world and now exports to 10 countries, bringing to the forefront varieties that were leaning towards extinction, such as Pamidi, Limnio, Damiaty, and Mavroudi. Nikos Vourvoukelis’s vision for the reintegration of Avdira’s vineyards into Greece’s wine map has become a reality.
Vourvoukeli Estate offers wines from earlier harvest periods, directly from the winery, for reasons of safety during transport.
The philosophy of our winery is to produce wines that evolve over time. A number of bottles are bound from selected crops, to develop their character in a calm and controlled environment, in our cellar, in a specially designed area of the winery.
Choose the vintage of your preference and depending on the availability of the specific vintage, two to six bottles could be sent, at most, in a safety package or in a gift package.
Vourvoukeli estate wines received significant awards from international wine fairs and international magazines.
