Some law schools may require you to submit additional essays if you are on the waiting list. It is important to read all instructions and guidelines when you receive your waitlist notice, as this will tell you if there are any additional requirements you need to be aware of. Most (but not all) law schools send an email with a link to an online status checker. This allows you to monitor the progress of your application as it moves from “complete” to “under review” and, eventually, when a decision has been made. If possible, try making an appointment with a financial planner to discuss a student loan repayment plan after law school. Ann — Thank you so much for this post. I knew the wait would be tough and a roller coaster. It was harder than expected, but it also taught me a lot. I have only one thing to add, and that all this fear can go in good and wrong directions. The good: You realize that you don`t control everything and that maybe some things happen for a reason (like my nice little UCLA waiting list today!), even if you don`t know what that reason is. You can read novels or travel, or do things that challenge you in other ways, at least in part in the name of distraction 😉, so you can accept the good news when it comes and lean on your friends and loved ones when it doesn`t. OR, you could. Spending way too much time on forum sites and law school numbers, trying (in vain) to deduce patterns with other people who have been admitted and rejected, trying to predict the future (I`m guilty of that!) Maybe you could even hire a psychic (I was close! I wonder what percentage of the U.S.

mental health industry has to do with anxious law students. ;). I really think that`s why these sites are so popular and somehow make the internet age a really crappy time to apply! BUT at the end of the day, no matter what you do, you still won`t *really* know until you actually know, until you get the letter, email, or phone call. Do you want to know how long you submitted your requests because a computer put you in a form and spat out a response? I don`t think so. And what caused all these worries besides freaking you out and sucking up your time and making you a less fun and informed person? I don`t want to sound cheesy or new-agey, but I feel like the recording process reminds me a lot of yoga 🙂, which taught me who exactly is responsible for how I react to the world. We hear from many students who have submitted their applications and are now waiting for a response or discovering that they are on the waiting list. Here are some helpful tips and tricks to help you position yourself in the best possible way for admission and help! LexisNexis has an entire chapter here on how to read case books. It`s also useful reading to prepare you for what you`ll be doing every day in law school. When I started applying, it was obvious that schools had all the power.

The ball was in their court. But when the acceptances came, I realized that a change of power was underway. Some schools provide information about scholarships when pledges are generated, others much later. The trick for me is to gather as much information as possible before making a decision. It`s like a very important chicken game. Whoever blinks first, loses. It seems to me that when I enroll in a particular school, their motivation to eventually offer money quickly disappears. If you were on the waiting list. Understand what this means: that you are an able-bodied candidate, but that the school must meet its institutional goals before it can accept you. Institutional goals could be related to LSAT/surrogacy, but could also be related to class balance in terms of gender, diversity, state/out-of-state, age, etc. Very few schools can accurately predict how many applicants – and with what qualities – they will come off a waiting list.

If the school tells you they don`t know, that`s most likely true. TCAT, just be gracious, be excited, thank you to the person. Get their contact information to follow up if you have questions later. You don`t have to accept anything right away, make promises, or tell them what you`re weighing in, but you can ask if there are scholarships you can apply for or are being considered for. You`ll likely make the jump into your first year of law school, which (if done right) requires you to shut down much of your social life for a while. If you`re shooting for Law Review, Moot Court, etc., then 1L will be a battle of epic proportions. You take on a lot of debt to do this, so pull out that credit card and go somewhere nice for a few weeks. Bring your thoughts to a good place before you prepare to unleash thunder on the competition.

Grab your surfboard and head to Oahu in mid-July. It`s going to be great. Would you recommend a candidate who has been deferred from an ED application to a t14 school to hang on, or should they send a LOCI expressing a desire to participate? It`s a good idea to send your sustained letter of interest a few days after your waitlisted schools` payment deadlines, as this will put you at the top of the admissions committee when they start assessing their waitlist. Ideally, you should visit the law school campus as soon as possible after being on the waiting list, but it`s okay to visit anytime while you`re on the waiting list. My last words of wisdom. Never stand between a law school candidate and their mailbox after mail has been delivered. This is a personal injury lawsuit waiting to be passed! And in case you`re wondering if I think you should go to law school, my standard answer is no. I hear many of my law school clients tell me today that they are getting worse with the waiting game. They applied to law school and they just want me to tell them where they will go to law school to develop a mathematical calculation that proves where they will be admitted and will not be admitted. Congratulations! All your law school applications are accepted, and you relax and wait for acceptances to arrive.

Of course, you should take some time, relax and catch up on all the things that have fallen by the wayside due to the stress surrounding your applications. I was put on the waiting list of every school I applied to. What are the chances of being removed from the waiting list? Be “pleasantly persistent” as we approach the end of March and April, which are the most important decision-making times for schools and students. And always remember that professionalism and good manners go a long way in this endeavor! If you are offered a place on the waiting list or an offer of admission after being on the waiting list for a period of time, it is important to provide a quick response, regardless of your answer.
